Soundscape by and for plants

Photographer and curator Chelsey Browne installed Nightshadows at the Kollectiv gallery in Folkestone, England. In her photographs, she “explores the interplay of ecology and technology, capturing plant life illuminated by artificial light. These intimate images highlight the unique character of each plant—some nurtured by humans, others defying the odds in unexpected places—emphasising their resilience and the coexistence of nature with the urban world.”

In this context, Ruth installed a soundscape The Seven (13 minutes on loop). It was by arranged and produced by Ruth to accompany the images of delicate and resilient plants. Using electrical signals from seven different plants imported into a Digital Audio Workstation, no amendments were made to the raw notes. Sounds were applied and arranged to produce a resonant sonic partner for the images.
